Rogers Smart City Challenge

Rogers, UBC, the City of Kelowna, Blue City Technology and Microsoft invite you to a virtual weekend challenge focussed on how 5G, MEC and LiDAR data will change the landscape of smart cities!

Technology innovation is the enabler that improves the possibilities and efficiencies of each smart city project. We are excited to invite you to learn, collaborate, iterate and ideate on what is possible when you collaborate in a multidisciplinary team from CS, Engineering, Urban Planning and Business using the following technologies:

  • 5G
  • Mobile edge compute
  • LiDAR and other transportation data sets
  • Microsoft Cognitive Libraries
  • Python programming skills (required for at least one team member)

Register for this virtual challenge to get:

  • Hands-on experience with edge compute, Microsoft Cognitive Libraries, LiDAR objects, and other transportation/traffic/smart city related data
  • E2E architecture overview of 5G, MEC infrastructure, and LiDAR sensors
  • Access to SMEs in traffic management, smart city solutions, MEC, 5G, and data science
  • Winners will have a chance to polish their prototypes with weekly coaching to present at the BC Tech Summit in early June.  Members of these winning teams will then be considered for a 4-month paid internship at Rogers.  Other great prizes will also be offered.

What can you build? Options include developing an original mobile/web application that solves mobility issues, such as parking, traffic jams, car use reduction, or apps that solve issues around public space congestion, security, and safety. We want to you use what you know about 5G and edge compute, and use the various data sources available to create something.
