Chantelle Ko, a Bachelor of Arts students with double majors in Music and English, has won the Multidisciplinary Undergraduate Research Conference – Undergraduate Research Opportunities (MURC-URO) Award out of 250 entrants. Ko won for her work on a Touch Responsive Augmented Violin Interface System (TRAVIS), an augmented violin with two touch sensor strips attached to the fingerboard, and two round sensors on the body of the instrument. The violin is played in the traditional manner, but the sensors allow the performer to control interactive media. TRAVIS can control parameters for sound effects, scrubbing pre-recorded samples, live recording and playback, and manipulating live video. Ko, supervised by ICICS member Bob Pritchard, has been an active member of the UBC Digital Performance Systems ensemble SUBCLASS (a laptop orchestra) that works out of the ICICS Sound Studio, and will be attending U. of Calgary next year for her Masters in Music Technology.
