Vincent Wong and Team Secure DND IDEaS Funding for 5G Research

A team led by ICICS member and Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE) professor Vincent Wong has won a 3 year, $1.5M award for a project titled “Toward Situational-aware and Adaptive 5G Networks for Defence and Security: A Machine Learning Approach”. The award is sponsored  by the Canadian Department of National Defence and the Canadian Armed Forces (DND/CAF) in response to the rapid development and deployment of commercial 5G technologies. The team’s proposal succcessfully addressed an Innovations Networks Challenge posed by DND’s Innovation for Defence Excellence and Security (IDEaS) program.

Dr. Wong’s research team includes Robert Xiao (UBC Computer Science), Dr. Karthik Pattabiraman (UBC ECE),  Lin Cai (University of Victoria),  Long Bao Le (University of Quebec), and Ben Liang (University of Toronto). Industry collaborators include Rogers Communications, Google Cloud, and General Dynamics Land Systems Canada.

Dr. Wong also leads fundamental 5G research within the UBC-Rogers partnership on 5G research and development.
