Rabab Ward Receives Career Achievement Award

Electrical Engineering Professor Rabab Ward was ICICS Director from 1996-2007. Rabab has received many distinguished awards over the years, and recently was honoured with the 2011 Career Achievement Award from the Confederation of University Faculty Associations of BC (CUFA BC). This award is given annually to a faculty member at BC’s doctoral universities (UBC, SFU, UNBC, UVic and Royal Roads University) whose work contributes to the wider community.

Rabab’s research advances in signal, image and video processing have had many important practical applications, including improved picture quality for cable television, a sophisticated brain–computer interface that allows people with mobility impairments to control various devices, and an improved method of processing mammograms that results in 70 per cent of cancers being identified a year earlier than was previously possible.

In addition to her research activities, Rabab is the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Coordinator for UBC in the Office of the Vice-President Research and International.

Our heartfelt congratulations to Rabab. We’re fortunate to have her at UBC.
