Rogers 5G Edge Codeathon

UBC and Rogers Communications have partnered to set up the first 5G smart campus in Canada. As part of this partnership, Rogers, working with UBC, Ericsson and MobiledgeX, hosted a 5G and Multi-access Edge Compute (MEC) codeathon in ICICS on October 25 and 26.

UBC’s best and brightest Computer Science and Engineering students were invited to learn, collaborate, iterate and ideate on how 5G and MEC will change the landscape of gaming, AR/VR, and other edge-heavy use cases. Students worked on two MEC use-cases using MobiledgeX (MeX) libraries for gaming and facial recognition app development.

Students participating in the codeathon and challenge benefitted from:

  • Hands on experience with cutting-edge devices, 5G network, and MEC
  • E2E architecture overview of deployed 5G and MEC infrastructure
  • Access to technology and technology expertise from industry leaders (Rogers, MobiledgeX and Ericsson.

As part of the codeathon and challenge, the Rogers Recruitment team hosted a “Hack Your Interview” session. Each team participated in a 15-minute interview, and the Recruitment team’s feedback was incorporated into the judges’ final decision, to give students a leg up in their job search.
